Obituaries

Verna Dean Schneider, 81, of Kearney died July 11, 2008, at her home.

She was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Stapleton to Vernon and Pearl (Kessler) Snyder.

In 1950, she married Galen Tatum in Kearney.

In 1962, she married Ivan Schneider in North Platte. He died in 1985.

She grew up and attended school in Stapleton. She lived most of her life in the North Platte and Kearney areas. She worked as a waitress and bartender for various businesses in the area. She later worked for Werner Construction as a flag person.

Her pastimes included playing cards, camping and time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband; her sons, Gary Tatum and Rick Tatum and his special friend, Kathy Vasquez, all of Kearney; daughters, Gail (Robert) Axtell, Linda (Donnie) Brown, Donnie, Cheryl Long and her special friend, Bobby Lewis, and Robin Kibler and her special friend, Ron Mansfield, all of Kearney; sister, Marlene Rasmussen of Roosevelt, Utah; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, four grandsons, four brothers and one sister.

Terry R. Britton, 68, of Kearney died July 10, 2008, at his residence.

He was born June 1, 1940, in Crawford, Neb., to Ralph and Helen (LeBlanc) Britton.

He attended a rural grade school east of Crawford and graduated from high school at the University of Nebraska Ag School in Curtis. He attended Gear Tech School in Chicago, learning the dirt and heavy equipment business.

On Aug. 29, 1964, he married Corliss Sullwold in Elm Creek.

He worked for Missouri Valley building roads in western Nebraska and on Interstate 80 prior to entering the U.S. Army on Dec. 16, 1965. He returned in October 1968 and worked on the interstate for a short time. He then worked for Gene Jameson doing land leveling for 7 years.

On Jan. 23, 1989, he married Virginia Schukar. He established his own business and operated it until illness forced his retirement.

He was baptized in the Methodist religion. He enjoyed his work and spending time with family. He never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with anyone and everyone.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Kearney; mother, Helen of Torrington, Wyo.; daughter, Christa Britton (Ben) Fleischacker of Kearney; brother, Robert (Bonnie) of Douglas, Wyo.; sisters, Marlene Keane of Gering, and Margie (Glenn) Nelson of Mead, Neb.; stepson, Jon Bunger of Junction City, Kan.; step-granddaughter, Vanessa Guigley of Milford, Kan.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and nephew, Dwayne Keane.

Frances Seifert, 79, of Ravenna died July 12, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

She was born July 25, 1928, in Buffalo County to Otto and Josie (Hladky) Bauer.

On June 5, 1948, she married Leonard Seifert in Ravenna.

She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1945. She and her husband made their home in Ravenna.

From 1952 to 1972, she worked for A. Mike Klein Elevators as a bookkeeper in Ravenna. She worked as the assistant city clerk in Ravenna from 1972 to 1983.

She was a member of Ravenna United Methodist Church. She served on several church committees, sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Ravenna Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Ravenna Railroaders Retirement Association for spouses.

Survivors include her husband; son, Lon of Minneapolis; brother, Alvin (Bernadene) Bauer of Hazard; sisters-in-law, Wilma Barton of Ravenna and LaJune Anderson of Lancaster, Calif.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Jane Marie; and her parents.

Walter ‘Gator’ H. Carroll, 69, of Grand Island died July 12, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

He was born Walter Hayworth Carroll II on Sept. 26, 1938, in South Bend, Ind., to Ruth and Walter H. Carroll I.

He graduated from New Carlisle (Ind.) High School in 1957.

In 1959, he married Josephine (Modjeska) Carroll.

He received his bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from LaVerne College in Ventura Calif., and spent 13 years on the Oxnard Police Department.

During his time in Oxnard he developed great relationships with others in law enforcement both on and off the job. Frequent trips to the desert, camping and being in the outdoors allowed him to develop lasting friendships that he also leaves behind.

The reunions of ‘The Fuzz that Was,’ Oxnard P.D. Alumni, became a highlight on his calendar.

He was a member of the California Narcotics Association and the Platt-Duetsche Society.

His distinguished career included offices of chief of police, detective, undersheriff and coroner investigator for various agencies. He spent 18 years as an instructor at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center, from which he retired in 2004.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Joan Carroll of Grand Island; three daughters, Dawn (Rod) Pearcy of Florida, and Susan Carroll and Nikki Lopez of California; a son, Walter ‘Gator’ H. Carroll III (Sabrina) of California; stepchildren and their spouses, Linda (Bill) Adair, Nancy (Michael) Ragains, Dean (Carol) Burmood, and Susan (Gary) Isom; and a brother, Michael Carroll of Oxnard, Calif.; five grandchildren, Skylar ‘Bullfrog’ Pearcy, Briehl Lopez, Nicolas Ackley, and Crystal and Shane Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lavona Elnora Nelson, 93, of Grant died July 11, 2008, at Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

She was born June 5, 1915, at the family ranch near Jennings, Kan., to Charles and Avis Bard. The family moved to Newark in 1921, where she attended school at District No. 24.

On Jan. 9, 1937, she married Floyd O. Nelson at the United Presbyterian parsonage in Minden. They moved to Palisade in 1939, and in 1942, they moved Des Moines, Iowa. They returned to Palisade in 1946.

She was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church, Palisade UMW, Rebekah Lodge No. 254 and Builders Class. She was the Thrift Shop manager, a piano teacher and business women.

Survivors include her two daughters, Karen (Richard) Thurin of Grant and Gloria Lawson of North Platte; brother-in-law, Richard Nelson of Lemoyne; sister-in-law, Iris Nelson of Grant Pass, Ore.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd in 2000; parents; brother, Theodore “Ted”; sister, Wilma; and great-grandson, Christian Thurin.
