Great Aunt Opal
June 6, 2013
Last weekend we drove 7 ½ hours to Clinton, Mo., for my grandpa’s family reunion. Though the reunion had been scheduled for nearly a year, my family and I had trouble deciding if we were going to go or not. The event fell during a busy time at my husband’s work and during our 10th wedding anniversary. In the end though, we thought that it would be a good idea for the kids and I to go see people — like one of my sweetest relatives — my great aunt Opal who is in her 90s. We were definitely due for a visit. The last time we were in Missouri to see my relatives was back in 2004 when my husband and I had only been married for a year. Sadly, some of my family there has passed away since then. So, I blame the last-minute nature of the trip

I have neighbors I haven’t visited for years. They were so good to me growing up. They raised walnuts. They are part of the reason I moved back to Arizona.
Teenaged renegades and ‘Grandma’
Got a couple of oldies, but goodies, in the true story line this week. Both these stories happened years ago, in some cases decades ago, but I know they’re true
What Do The Country Folk Do?
“What do the simple folk do?” So goes the line from the musical Camelot. Non-agricultural folk sometimes sound a bit like a gaggle of King Arthurs and Queen Guineveres when they expound
The tale of Grimsby
This is a perfectly Grimsby day, I thought to myself this morning as I set out on my walk. Grimsby? Yes and there is a tale to go with it.
Fort Martin Scott
Apaches, Comanches and other Indians collided with German and American settlers, the frontier military, and ranger groups in the Texas Hill country of the 19th century leading to establishment of
Pointless points
One hundred and fifty years ago it was common for country folks to charge all purchases for an entire year before paying off the bill. The proprietor of the store
