The Waffleman

With wide-eyed wonder, two Kansas sixth-graders excitedly raced into a school cafeteria to see for themselves, how ‘The Waffleman’ cooks up 396 waffles in an hour.

“They’re awesome. Best waffles ever,” exclaimed Jared Edwards, a 12-year-old from Narka, Kan., after enjoying his waffle dinner at the Republic County Junior Senior High School in Belleville, Kan., February 8. “I like the strawberry syrup with whipped cream on it, oh-and the butter,” he smiled.

Jared’s classmate, Emily Martin, of Belleville also animatedly gave the waffles a thumbs-up.

“They were really good. I was excited when I heard that The Waffleman was coming tonight,” said Emily.

As the crowd poured in to watch The Waffleman pour his batter onto 25 professional hot waffle irons lined-up in an ‘L’ shaped setting, they didn’t wait long for results. Four minutes later, in grand precision, The Waffleman Doug McCallum flipped all 25 irons consecutively with picture-perfect results, offering customers an oversized Belgian waffle. Flavored syrups, an endless bowl of whipped cream, and tasty sausages completed the meal.

“We’ve got a pretty good crowd tonight,” bellowed school Principal Alan Sheets over the crowd’s volume during the high school basketball game, which was played in conjunction with the waffle dinner fundraiser. “This is only one of three gyms that he breaks out all his waffle irons, and it’s a great win-win, because everyone’s happy,” Sheets explains.

It is a win-win, because The Waffleman experience is geared largely to fundraising events, such as this one, when he helped the high school raise money for its prom night. The Waffleman also recently orchestrated a fundraiser for a cancer victim in another state.

“I do it, because I have a soft spot for non-profits,” said Doug ‘The Waffleman,’ who travels from his home in Eagle, Neb., near Lincoln, around the region; enjoying his craft of producing 120 waffle events a year. Previously, Doug was a business consultant. Now, in addition to the waffle fundraisers, he helps families set-up long-term care options for ailing or elderly relatives who can no longer live at home, and works through an agency.

To keep the waffle irons rolling, Doug hires part time workers and asks organizations to supply 10 volunteers an hour at each event. ‘The Waffleman’ doesn’t take time to waffle around. He operates an efficient operation.

“We bake 396 waffles an hour. That’s 45,000 waffles that we serve each year, along with 100,000 sausages. We raise $90,000 a year for fundraisers,” he added.

After serving a grand total of 250,000 waffles over the past 10 years, its full steam ahead for 2013. The Waffleman’s calendar fills-up, as quickly as the people enjoying his all-you-can-eat scrumptious waffles.
