Colorado Northwestern Community College’s (CNCC) Horse Management and Horsemanship Program recently hosted its first horse clinic with nationally recognized trainer and clinician, Debbie Bibb.
Participants worked their horses under Debbie’s close eye 8 hours per day for five days to better learn, Debbie said, “This is how to have the most pleasurable and rewarding experience possible with the time [they] have to spend with [their] horse."
Bibb strongly believes in teaching horse and rider to work together using communication, relationship, and performance to help owners build what she calls, their “Horse of a Lifetime”. This may be a horse used for pleasure riding, competing in 4-H projects, working cattle, or other activity. One clinic participant, 4-H horse leader, Amy Ward, for example, wanted to “[Better] help her 4-H members be successful with their horses.” Another participant, Briana Bromley, said she “... just wanted to come out and have fun with [her] horse, Sedona.”
Students studying in CNCC’s equine program choose from a variety of horse specializations such as riding instruction, stable management, guiding and outfitting, and training. Additionally, CNCC wants to offer area horse enthusiasts clinics that also meet their needs. For these reasons, clinic coordinator, CNCC equine instructor, Jim Rogers, felt Bibb’s background (4-H experience, horse packing, versatility ranch horse and jumping competition, and John Lyons certification) well suited her to teach a variety of horse owners who might attend this clinic.
Rogers met Bibbs at this spring’s Rock Mountain Horse Expo when he took the CNCC horse program students to see various trainers and clinicians.
Rogers liked Bibb’s focus on ensuring success between horse and rider in a relaxed atmosphere, and her ability to work with all levels of riders and their horses. “The week long clinic was successful, says Rogers, “and we plan to offer more opportunities in the future for our college students as well as all interested horse owners.”
