2009 Colorado Youth Dairy Extravaganza

The eighth annual Colorado Dairy Youth Extravaganza was held May 31-June 2 at Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley, Colo. A record high 73 youth from six Colorado counties registered and participated in the Extravaganza. In addition to the cattle shows, youth participated in a Dairy Quiz Bowl contest, Dairy Olympics, and educational clinics for fitting and showmanship.

A total of 118 head of dairy cattle, representing all six major breeds, were exhibited at the event. Harry Papageorge of Ogden, Utah, served as judge. Nicholas Elliott of Kersey, Colo., won Supreme Champion Junior Female with his Jersey heifer. Reserve Supreme Champion Junior Female with her Holstein heifer was Kendra Intermill of Gill, Colo. The Supreme Champion Senior Female was a 5-year old Jersey cow exhibited by Marci Hardesty of Greeley, Colo. Reserve Champion Senior Female was a Holstein 3-year old cow exhibited by Chase Maxey of Greeley, Colo.

Showmanship classes were divided according to years of experience in showing dairy cattle. Winners were: Mattie Sherwood, Brush, Colo., First year project member; Tyler Bauer, Johnstown, Colo., Second year project member; Madessa Hoffer-Dye, Fort Collins, Colo., Third year and over, Junior Division; and Marci Hardesty, Greeley, Colo., Third year and over, Senior Division.

Premier Dairy Exhibitor awards were awarded to Cole Collier, Wiggins, Colo., Junior Division; Tate Mesbergen, Greeley, Colo., Intermediate Division; and Marci Hardesty, Greeley, Colo., Senior Division.

Megan Vande Steeg of Gill, Colo., won the grand prize with a registered Holstein heifer calf donated by Maxey Dairy of Greeley, Colo., and co-sponsored by the Colorado Holstein Association. Connor Lowndes of Windsor, Colo., won a set of animal clippers, donated by Mountain Vet Supply in Fort Collins, Colo.; and Slayter Goss of Merino, Colo., won a dairy show halter.

The Colorado Dairy Youth Extravaganza is coordinated by Weld County Extension, with assistance from the Weld County 4-H Dairy Advisory Council, the Colorado Holstein Association and the support of many local businesses and dairy producers.
