Limon Exhibit Building
You still have time to make plans to help the Town of Limon and Museum volunteers celebrate 100 years of history on Saturday, August 1. Visitors are invited to one of Limon's biggest birthday festivities as the 18th Annual Heritage Day opens in the downtown Railroad Park, Depot, Exhibit Building, Town Hall and Festival Tents.
The day starts with the immensely popular Fifth Annual Historic Pershing Cemetery Tour which each year brings to life the stories, as told by descendants in costume, of honored early settlers. This year the pioneer Mariner, Knapp, and Morrison families are featured. Scheduled at the Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., visitors are invited to catch a 9:15 bus at the Depot Welcome Center to be greeted on site by Heritage Society hosts.
At 10:30 a.m., the Railroad Park grounds come to life with venders, music, kid's rides, tours and varied displays offering hands-on participation. More than 30 demonstrators, many wearing vintage clothing, will be exhibiting lost arts and pioneer crafts from quilting, spinning, chair caning, tatting, knitting, loom and carriage wheel weaving, genealogy and lace making. A blacksmith and a barrel maker will also demonstrate.
Jim Fulmer and friends from nearby Simla will bring a rare collection of more than 12 antique tractors plus hit and miss engines. Join numerous other vintage machine collectors for a unique Centennial show along the Museum Machinery Walkway.
Maps, water, programs, Centennial buttons, information and parasols will be available at the Welcome Tent. At 11:30 a.m., Victor Walters will direct summer camp youth musicians in an entertaining presentation of “Our Town, A Musical Journey,” under the trees at the Depot lawn Music Tent.
A lovely Centennial Quilt Show in the nearby Hub City Senior Center features both contemporary and vintage quilts by many of the areas most gifted artisans. The Show will close at 3:30 p.m., and is a not to be missed part of the Heritage Celebration.
Another 100 year adventure is a tour of the exciting Centennial Display in the Museum Exhibit Building focusing on the changes since Limon's 1909 incorporation.
Beautiful old photos and artifacts from an earlier time bring to life this varied display.
For this day only, a contingent of “Sons of Norway” pioneers from several towns will be exhibiting Norwegian arts, crafts and sharing tasty treats and songs.
The famous homemade pie sale hosted by the Limon Red Hat Society on the Railroad Dining Car ($2.50 a slice while it lasts), a delicious noon barbecue, a Farmer's Market and events for kids including barrel train rides, an FFA Petting Corral, Sadie the baby buffalo from Prairie Ridge Buffalo Ranch, face painting by Crackers the Clown, a real school marm and an old-time tug of war are a few of the delights for young children.
Before the noon barbecue a State of Colorado Centennial Proclamation will be read at the Pioneer Schoolhouse. Rail fans will enjoy seeing the newly restored 1910 Depot (on the National Register of Historic Structures) with its beautiful new home for the Town's extensive Houtz Native American Collection, an N-Scale model of Limon in the 1940s and the Museum's four rail cars.
At 1:15 p.m., the official Centennial Beard Growing Contest will begin with a sign up and photos at the Western Boxcar. (This contest ends with prizes and ceremonies on November 3 — the actual date of Limon's incorporation in 1909.)
At 3 p.m., a music and memorial ceremony honoring the late Thomas J. Hilferty and the 2009 Limon High Senior Class will be featured in front of the Exhibit Building at the Memorial Gardens Pergola in a tribute to stewardship and this day of celebration.
Volunteers of the Heritage Society have carefully planned a day of nostalgic fun for everyone. There is no admission charge and all events are free except for food. There are many fun opportunities for children and it is hoped visitors can step back in time and enjoy the Gardens windmills, Railroad Park, and historic artifacts. Guided tours of the entire Museum Complex will be offered all day. Plan to be there! For those who cannot attend the August 1, celebration the Museum is open Monday-Saturday 1-8 p.m., free, until September 7. The Heritage Society is also hosting a free Pops Concert and Ice Cream Social at 6 p.m., Saturday, August 29.
