A large crowd was on hand to enjoy the 7th annual Feeders and Friends Benefit Feedlot Rodeo and Auction on Saturday, August 15, at the New Raymer, Colo., fair grounds. Five man teams of feedlot cowboys from Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska competed in cattle doctoring, sorting, steer mugging, trailer loading and wild cow milking.
The action was furious as events went on simultaneously. While some team members were loading a steer in a trailer others were tying one down or sorting two out to pen in a corral. The wildest event proved to be the wild cow milking. A roped cow jumped around while one cowboy hung onto her head, trying to restrain her and another attempted to get to her udder to milk her. Finishing all five events within the 5 minute time limit proved much harder than it looked. Only eight out of 20 teams managed to do it. With a time of 3 minutes, 22 seconds the Teitmeyer Farms Inc. team of Grover, Colo., was the big winner. The team consisted of Kyle Breeden, Chris Haun, Myron Moore, Gary Rodarmel and Rod Venn.
Activities continued following the feedlot rodeo with a tasty meal of rocky mountain oysters, BBQ brisket, brats or hot dogs. It was obviously a gathering of friends as people visited with each other while they enjoyed their food. With effort the announcer pulled people away from their visiting to present prizes. Awards of various items of tack were given through sixth place. The first place winners took home individual trophy buckles and as a team, a beautiful carved traveling wall hanging.
Immediately following the presentation of winners a huge variety of hundreds of items were auctioned off. The day was capped of with a dance at the New Raymer community building. The large gathering enjoyed the music of the Colorado Connection until 1 a.m.
All these activities raised money for this years chosen memorial recipient, the memory of Jesse Samber, of Stoneham, Colo. He was killed in a tragic farm accident, leaving two little boys. Each year for the past seven years a recipient from the local northeastern area is selected. Funds have been used for everything from medical or rehab expenses to scholarships. Past memorial events have raised from $26,000 to $51,000. All the help and articles for the auction are donated. This keeps expenses to a minimum allowing the recipient to receive more of the proceeds.
