The 11th annual charity calf sale to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County will be Saturday at Greeley Producers, 711 O St., just east of U.S. 85 in north Greeley.
Greg Kimbrough, the chief professional officer for the clubs, said he expects about 20 calves to be available for auction this year, donated by area cattle feeders and ranchers. A prime rib lunch for buyers will be served at 11 a.m., prepared by Chuck Carlson, followed by the sale at 1 p.m. The lunch will be offered in the Stockman Cafe at Producers.
The annual sale raises in excess of $100,000 for the clubs. Last year, even under difficult economic conditions, it raised about $106,000, Kimbrough said.
Kimbrough said the money is used to support the ongoing programs and services the four clubs offer to kids at two locations in Greeley, and one each in Galeton and Milliken.
“This is my second year and this sale is amazing,” Kimbrough said. The clubs, he added, serve about 1,000 kids a year.
Purchasers of calves don't actually have to keep them — unless they so desire — so the sale offers those who may not have had an opportunity at any other time to participate in a live cattle auction.
Producers provides the auctioneers and handles the paperwork of the sale; those calves actually bought go through the regular Producers sale the following Wednesday and that money also goes to the clubs.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County was established in 1964.
The clubs offer programs for youth ages 6-18 years old in five core areas including character and leadership, health and life skills, career and education, the arts, and sports, fitness and recreation. The clubs are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. during the summer and 3-8 p.m. during the school year. There is a charge of $10 for summer and $10 for the school year. All sports and activities at the club are free for active club members.
