Larry Ross Knowles

Larry Ross Knowles, 70, of Crawford, Colo., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in Hotchkiss, Colo.

Larry was born to Ross and Agnes (Sharpe) Knowles on November 12, 1943 in Soda Springs, Idaho.

He grew up in Bancroft, Idaho, where he graduated from North Gem High School. He was a state champion wrestler. He rode bulls and traveled the rodeo circuit.

He married Cheryl Nance in September of 1964. The couple had two daughters. The marriage ended in divorce.

Larry married Robbyn Arlene Hayward on June 28, 1969 in Security, Colorado. The couple moved to Crawford in 1974 where they raised their family. Larry worked as a coal miner, concrete finisher and many part time jobs. He loved to help the ranchers with branding, moving cows or anything else that needed to be done. He loved hunting, riding and camping in the mountains. He also loved snowmobiling, water skiing, camping with family and friends, spending time in the great outdoors and he truly was a hard working man.

In 1994, Larry and Robbyn moved to Black Mesa Lodge and worked for Tom McLeod. He spent the next 17 years doing all the things he loved to do in a family atmosphere where he made friends from all over the country. He retired from the mountain in 2011 and moved back to Crawford, where he loved hanging out with friends, family, and watching the Broncos.

Larry was a member of several organizations including Hotchkiss Elks Lodge, North Fork Snowmobile Club, Clampers and a former volunteer for the Crawford Fire Department.

Larry is survived by his wife, Robbyn Knowles of Crawford, Colo.; three daughters: Tammy (Kenny) Hatch of Pueblo West, Colo.; Tracy Knowles (Tim) Chapman of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and Angele (Randy) Rodstrom of Crawford, Colo.; two sons, Jeff (Kristi) Knowles and Grant (Tina) Knowles both of Whitewater, Colo.; two sisters, Annabel Muir of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Marty Latham of Inkom, Idaho; and one brother, Kenny (Sharon) Knowles of Lava Hot Springs, Idaho. Larry is further survived by eight grandchildren: Jennifer (Tom) Henderson, Tucker, Moriah, Ashley, Zaviar, Becca, Brittney and Courtney; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many kids who grew up in Crawford and thought of him as “Pops”.

Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Grant Ellis Knowles; parents, Ross and Agnes Knowles; and his grandparents.

At Larry’s request, no services will be held. A Celebration of Life and Potluck was held March 1, 2014, at the Boardwalk in Crawford.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Larry’s memory to the Crawford Ambulance and Crawford Fire Department. View the internet obituary and sign the online guest registry at
