Thomas (Tom) Frederick Jones
Thomas (Tom) Frederick Jones, 73, of Cedaredge, Colo., passed away March 29, 2014.
Tom’s “Last Rodeo” was in Wickenburg, Ariz., while on vacation with his wife, Janice, in the desert he loved so much. Tom suffered a heart attack while watching bull riding at the Gold Rush Days Rodeo. He passed away from complications six weeks later.
Tom was born on July 9, 1940 to Fred and Rosetta (Cain) Jones in Detroit, Mich.
He moved to Colorado when he was a young child, so he always considered himself a Colorado native. He grew up on the Front Range of Colorado.
He competed in the inaugural Little Britches Rodeo in 1952 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds. After graduating from Douglas County High School in 1958, he went on to attend Colorado State University, where he was a member of the Rodeo Team, riding bulls and bareback broncos. He graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Arizona.
Tom married Janice Kennedy on April 17, 1965, in Colorado Springs, Colo. They were blessed with two beautiful children, Brenda and Ty. In 1975, Tom and his family moved to Cedaredge, Colo., after a long search for the perfect place to raise a family. Tom and Janice built their own log house where they spent so many wonderful years together.
Tom always worked hard to provide for his family. Among many other endeavors, he served his country in the Air National Guard, owned a carpet store with his brother, Dan, owned and operated a real estate brokerage in Cedaredge and worked for the Delta County Assessor’s Office. He went on to work for and retire from the National Resources Conservation Service.
Tom was active in the community, serving on many Boards, including most recently, Operation Round-Up and the Member Advisory Board for DMEA, Pioneer Town, and Thunder Mountain Wheelers. He enjoyed volunteering his time with Hospice (Hope West) and the Adopt-A-Highway program, as well as helping friends and family with every project imaginable.
His hobbies include traveling (especially in the Desert Southwest), ATVing, exploring Indian ruins, horseback riding on the Mesa, enjoying the view from his front porch and spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed fellowship with his church family at the Eckert Presbyterian Church.
Tom is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter, Brenda (Kimber) and her husband Terry and their two children, Erika and Austin; and son, Ty and his wife Tami and their two children Zoe and Kylee. He is further survived by nieces and nephews Brett Jones, Angie Prince, Craig Kennedy, Tina Kincaid, Cindy Kennedy, Kirsten Gregory, Kurt Mueller, Lisa Levy, Hanna Pope and Peter Fosburgh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Rosetta Jones and his brother, Daniel Jones.
Services were held April 5, 2014, at the Eckert Presbyterian Church. Burial followed at the Cedaredge Cemetery, with a celebration of life to follow on Tom’s front porch.
