Dorothy Elizabeth (Collins) McIntosh

Dorothy Elizabeth (Collins) McIntosh, 91, of Meadow Grove, Neb., passed away January 6, 2013, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek, Nebraska.

She was the daughter of Ray Donald and Bessie Alice (Jones) Collins, and was born September 22, 1921, at the family home, 4-1/2 miles south of Madison, Neb.

Dorothy began her education at Madison Rural School District 83, then attended Liberty Consolidated School, starting in the first grade until midway through the fourth grade. Dorothy attended a portion of the fourth grade in Canon City, Colo., and attended fifth grade in Madison, Neb., where her family had returned and built a new home. Due to her father’s health, Dorothy moved with her family to southern California, where she attended Fremont High School in Los Angeles, Calif. Dorothy graduated from Madison High School in 1938. After high school, Dorothy completed one year of college at Compton Junior College in California.

On April 12, 1942, Dorothy was married to Gordon McIntosh at the Madison Methodist Church. The young couple lived in California the first two years of their marriage, then moved to a farm located 10 miles south of Meadow Grove, Neb., where they were blessed with two children, Beth Ann and Garry. After residing on the farm for 15 years, Dorothy and Gordon moved to Meadow Grove, Neb.

Dorothy was a member of the Methodist Church in Madison, Neb., and later a member of the Methodist Church in Meadow Grove, Neb., and its UMW. She also was a member of the Emerick Goldenrod Club and the Meadow Grove Sorosis. For several years, Dorothy registered voters in Madison County, and served on election boards. During the majority of her life, Dorothy was a homemaker. After Dorothy and Gordon retired together, they restored a 1947 Chevrolet and enjoyed being members of the Norfolk Antique Car Club.

She is survived by her children, Beth Ann (Doug) Ellis of Meadow Grove, Neb., and Garry (Lynne) McIntosh of Fremont, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon McIntosh in 1993; a sister (in infancy); her parents; daughter-in-law, Mary Beth McIntosh; and a granddaughter, Megan McIntosh.

Memorial services were held January 9, 2013 at United Methodist Church in Meadow Grove, Neb.

Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Madison, Neb. ❖

Bobby D. Reed

Bobby D. Reed, 69, of Peetz, Colo., passed away January 1, 2013 at Chadron Community Hospital in Chadron, Neb.

Bobby, also known as Bob, was born on January 11, 1943 to Dewey and Freida, Reed, south of Gordon, Neb. He grew up riding horses to country school and when he entered Junior High he lived in Gordon, Neb., with his oldest sister Jane and Kenneth Hilliker.

Bob loved the cowboy life, riding, roping and breaking horses. He worked for many big ranches around Gordon, Neb.: Cross-Five, Cross Ranch, and Jess McGinley.

Bob and Connie were united in marriage June 1, 1961.

He and family moved to Peetz, Colo., to become head school bus driver/transportation maintenance specialist for 22 years. He retired due to health issues in 2004.

He is survived by the love of his life for 52 years Connie; children, Rob Reed and friend Stephanie Henrichs of Hay Springs, Neb., Ron (Marilyn) Reed of Hay Springs, Neb., Lorrie (Dan) Wood, Peetz, Colo., Sherrie (Arnie) Biberos, Sidney, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Leona Hoffman, brothers Bill Reed, Byron Reed, and infant sibling, and brothers-in-law Ken Hilliker, Lynn Hilliker, and Jerry Hoffman.

Memorial services were held January 5, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs, Neb.

Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville, Neb.

Shirley Janet Packard

Shirley Janet Packard, 77, of Arthur, Neb., passed away January 6, 2013 at the Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home in Ogallala, Neb.

She was born December 26, 1935 in Julesburg, Colo., the daughter of George and Laura (Hardessen) Ballentine. She graduated from the Brule High School in 1953. After attending the Midwest Hair Academy she was employed by the Stewart Beauty Shop in Ogallala, Neb.

On March 27, 1960 she married Gerald W. Packard of Arthur, Neb. She lived and loved the ranch life, where she worked anywhere she was needed. She always made sure good food and plenty of it was on the table.

Shirley felt there was no such thing as a stranger, whom she quickly befriended with her witty humor. Her favorite things in life were the animals she cared for, the gardens and flowers that she nurtured, the meals she prepared for all those around her and pulling pranks just for fun. She enjoyed sharing all these things with family and friends through her passion for photography and laughter.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gerry Packard of Arthur, Neb.; one son George (Carol) Packard of Ogallala, Neb.; two daughters, Kerri (Chris) Melson of Claude, Texas, and Lori (Don) Walker of Arthur, Neb.; two brothers, Dayton (Carolyn) Ballentine of Brule, Neb., and Ray (Pat) Ballentine of Ogallala, Neb.; two sister-in-laws Sharon (William) Welsh of Culbertson, Neb., and Marion Packard of Sterling, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Tyler (Sammy) Walker, Jace, Mikaela and Mackenzie Walker, Sarah and Dana Melson, Garth, Grant and Grady Packard; two great-grandchildren, Cooper and Cody Walker; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Laura Ballentine and a brother-in-law Glenn Packard.

At Shirley’s request, private family services were held.

Cremation was chosen.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur Betterment Authority Committee in her memory.
