Marvin Smith, 76, passed away December 28, 2012 in North Platte, Neb.
He was born July 31, 1936 in Franklin, Neb., to Milo and Viola Smith.
At the age of 16, Marvin went to work as a ranch hand for Chas Long at the Long Ranch northwest of North Platte, Neb. He worked for three generations of the Long family. One of his most out-of-the-ordinary jobs as a ranch hand was helping prepare for the visit of President Ronald Reagan to the Long Ranch in 1987. Marvin was a kind and gentle man who loved the ranch, the livestock and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Over the years the Long family became Marvin’s extended family.
He is survived by Margaret Long, Michaelene Long and Cathy Long, all of North Platte, Neb.; Tom Long of Gothenburg, Neb., and Patrick Long of Elko, Nev.
Private memorial services will be at a later date at the Long Ranch.
Cremation was chosen.

Robert “Bob” Wade
Robert “Bob” Wade, 76 of Johnson Lake, Neb., passed away December 8, 2012 at the Bryan LGH Medical Center East.
He was born September 5, 1936 east of Elwood, Neb., to Lowell E. and Alice L. (Fong) Wade. He graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1954. Bob later attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln before joining the Army National Guard. It was at boot camp that Bob met his eventual wife, Catherine Clough.
On December 7, 1958, Bob married Catherine at Versailles, Ky. The couple made their home in the Elwood, Neb., area where Bob farmed with his father for several years. Bob’s life was blessed with three children: Sonia, Greg and Todd.
In 1969, the family moved to California where Bob worked in trucking. A few years later they moved to Waverly, Neb., where he worked at Good Year and Yellow Freight. In 1974, Bob moved to Lexington, Neb., where he resumed farming. He also did some real estate development, but farming always remained his passion.
On March 3, 1984, Bob married Barbara Morris. The couple resided on the farm near Johnson Lake, Neb., before eventually moving to a home at Lakeview Acres. Following Barb’s passing in 2008, Bob returned to the farm, where he lived and worked until his health would no longer allow.
Bob was a long time member of the First Christian Church in Elwood, Neb. He had also been involved in the Lions Club in earlier years.
Among Bob’s many enjoyments were farming, working with cattle, traveling and Husker football. He was also a bit of a philanthropist, having created and helped fund multiple local scholarships and charitable causes.
He is survived by his daughter, Sonia (Randy) Howard of Gothenburg, Neb.; two sons, Greg Wade of Elm Creek, Neb., and Todd Wade of Lincoln, Neb.; two step-sons, Tim (Allison) Wamsley of Salt Lake City, Utah, Scott (Debra) Wamsley of Alabama; step-daughter, Sheri (Rick) Ballhorst of Grand Island, Neb.; sister, Marilyn (Myron) Dawson of Elwood, Neb.; four grandchildren, Monte (Amy) Brummet, Tasha Brummet, Sam Brummet, Rachel Howard; 2 great grandchild, Brenna Brummet, Tripp Brummet; five step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; his significant other, Carol Stalker of Kearney, Neb.; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Lowell Dennis Wade; and a nephew, Lowell Chad Wade.
Memorial services will be held December 12, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Elwood, Neb.
Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery. ❖
Theresa Vyhlidal, 89, of Schuyler, Neb., passed away December 29, 2012, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
She was born January 27, 1923, in Valparaiso, Neb., to Benedict and Georgibelle (Bingham) Bartek. On October 12, 1942, she married Joseph Vyhlidal at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Valparaiso, Neb. They lived many years on a farm near Cedar Hill.
Theresa worked at the trailer plant in North Bend, Neb., and Campbell’s Soup in Fremont, Neb. She lived at the “High Rise” in Schuyler, Neb., until moving into the assisted living at Golden Living in Schuyler, Neb. Theresa enjoyed dancing, Czech music and Polka festivals, bingo and visiting with friends at the Senior Center in Schuyler, Neb. She always had a smile on her face. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Schuyler, Neb.
She is survived by her brother, Albert (Beverly) Bartek of Valparaiso, Neb.; special friend, Claudine (Daryl) Mares of Schuyler, Neb.; grandson, Jeff (Kristina) Janda and great-grandchildren Lance and Trevor; grandson, Mike Janda and great-gradnchildren Tyler, Josie, Hanna; and many cousins nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Josephine Janda and Theresa Ann and her husband, Larry Thrall; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben and Mary Bartek, Leonard and Betty Bartek; and good friend Bill Krenk.
Memorial services were held January 2, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cedar Hill.
Committal was at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Hill.
