Evelyn Heuschkel

Evelyn Heuschkel, 91, of Grand Junction, Colo., passed away November 22, 2012 of natural causes surrounded by family.

She was born in Salt Creek (three miles south of Collbran, Colo.) to Edwin Gunderson, Sr., and Ruth Eva Kesterson on July 12, 1921. She graduated from Collbran Union High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Colorado Woman’s College in Denver, Colo. She worked for many years in Denver, Colo., and Grand Junction, Colo., as a Registered Nurse.

Growing up on the family’s cattle ranch, she developed an adventuresome spirit and a profound affection for reading, hiking, camping and traveling. At 85 she achieved a goal from her bucket list by flying a tandem paraglider from the mountains above Santa Barbara, Calif. Accompanied by son, Bob, and several pilot friends, her adventure was memorialized in a nationally published magazine article.

She is survived by son, Robert Hurlbett (Sara Weber); step-sons Tom and Dave Heuschkel (Cheryl); and loving nieces, nephews, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, Vern Heuschkel.

Private remembrances are planned.

Fernando Christopher “Bison” Lopez

Fernando Christopher “Bison” Lopez, 59, of Grand Junction, Colo., passed away November 18, 2012, in Grand Junction, Colo.

He was born December 16, 1952, to Fernando and Esther Lopez in Morenci, Ariz. Christopher honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service he worked on an oil rig for 18 years.

He enjoyed leather crafting and making dream catchers. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as taking care of his livestock and farming.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Lou Lopez of Grand Junction, Colo.; his children, Tracy Michelle Lopez of Denver, Colo., and Fernando Lopez of Grand Junction, Colo.; two grandchildren; his step-son, Harold Thomas-Eugene Neves of Grand Junction, Colo.; his mother, Esther Lopez of Manassa, Colo.; his brother, Herold Lopez of Durango, Colo., and his nephews, Jacob and Elijah Ortiz and Isais, Noah and Abel Lopez.

He was preceded in death by his father; sister, Elaine Ortiz; nephew, Rueben Ortiz; brother-in-law, Reuben N. Ortiz, and sister-in-law, Gloria Ortiz.

Memorial services were held November 26, 2012, at the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Manassa, Colo.

Burial was in the Los Cerritos Cemetery in Manassa, Colo.

Oliver M. Smith

Oliver M. Smith, 94, of North Fork, Colo., passed away November 23, 2012 at the Paonia Care and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born to Robert Oliver and Audra E. (McMillin) Smith on September 26, 1918 in Haviland, Kan. He spent his early childhood in Kansas before moving to Crawford, Colo., in 1933. Oliver was one of seven students who graduated from Crawford High School in 1936.

Oliver honorably served his country with the United States Air Force during World War II.

On December 31, 1942, Oliver married Margaret O. Howard in Fresno, Calif. To this union, a son and daughter were born. Oliver and Margaret shared over 59 years of marriage before Margaret’s passing on August 2, 2002 in Paonia, Colo.

Oliver was a member of Freeman Heights Baptist Church in Arkansas. Among many interests, Oliver enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time in the great outdoors. He loved taking care of his farm, raising pigs, chickens and cattle. Oliver resided in Berryville, Ark., for 20 years before moving back to Colorado in 1984.

He is survived by his son, David Smith and his wife Rita of Lakewood, Colo.; two brothers, Benny Smith of Hotchkiss, Colo., and David Smith and wife Carol of Carson City, Nev.; one sister, Joyce Holybee of Paonia, Colo.; four grandchildren, Debra, Roger, Robert and Christopher Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Smith; and his daughter, Christina Smith.

Memorial services were held November 28, 2012 in Hotchkiss, Colo.

Inurnment was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia, Colo.

Willard Nelson Bull

Willard Nelson Bull, 87, of Cedaredge, Colo., passed away November 23, 2012 of natural causes in his sleep at his residence in Cedaredge, Colo.

He was born May 29, 1925 to Ernest Atwood and Dorothy Nelson Bull in Cedaredge, Colo. He spent his childhood in Cedaredge, Colo., and graduated from Cedaredge High School with the class of 1944.

Willard married June Imhoff on August 19, 1958. To this union one son, Alan Bull, was born. June preceded Willard in death in December 1999.

He later married Beverly Barr. She survives.

Willard, a loving husband and father, was a third generation Cedaredge pioneer. He loved hunting, horseback riding and working his cattle. He was also a great story teller.

Willard was a member of the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church and served on the board of several irrigation companies. He was deputy water commissioner for 15 years. Willard was a farmer, rancher and dairyman by trade.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his son, Alan Bull and spouse, Linda, all of Cedaredge, Colo; a brother, Robert Bull and spouse, Fern of Layton, Utah; two sisters: Marolyn Wood of Meade, Kan., and Jean Gilleece of Grand Junction, Colo.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Dorothy Bull and his first wife, June Bull.

Memorial services were held November 29, 2012 at the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church in Cedaredge, Colo.

Interment was held prior to the memorial service at Cedaredge Cemetery in Cedaredge, Colo.
