Tawni Strachan
Elbert County 4-H Reporter

The May meeting of the Elbert Creekside 4-H Club was called to order at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday April 25, 2010, by club President Colten Rohleder. Pledges were said and attendance was called by Club Secretary Travis Cayou. Club Treasurer McKenna Henderson gave a wonderful Treasurer’s Report.

Kort Henderson gave a Youth Council Report, and reported that duffel bags will be presented to all Champions at the fair this year. The first annual 4-H Gala was a huge success; we raised around $12,000 for scholarships and other 4-H programs! Thank you to all volunteers, 4-Hers, leaders, and the most famous cook in Elbert County – Thurston Nealy! Elbert Creekside members were glad to help serve the dinner with other 4-H members from around the County.

We then celebrated May birthdays: Kayla Mulkin, Hayden Stout, Levi Cabrera, and others that had not shown up to the previous meeting.

We picked the date of June 13, 2010 for our Trash Walk/Barbecue/June Meeting. Creekside members will meet at the Elbert Mini Mart at 1:00 p.m., and will pick up trash along the Elbert Highway. If you ever see Creekside 4-Hers, please sponsor them for this trash walk, and help get the community cleaner! The Club Barbecue will be coordinated this year by Kristi Strachan and Joy Rosburg. On May 1, there will be the Eastern Slope Livestock Judging in Kiowa; it is an all day event. On May 8, there will be a Horse Seminar on Advance Showmanship, 9 a.m., at the Fairgrounds. May 12, is the Swine Weigh-In, from 3:00-7:00 p.m., at the Fairgrounds Scale House. On May 17, there will be a Livestock Carcass Seminar, on Reproduction, 7:00 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall. Remember that all 4-Hers competing in the Supreme Contest must attend one of the Carcass Seminars. On May 19, the sheep/goat weigh-in and turkey banding will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Scale House. An important date for all 4-Hers in the horse or rabbit projects is June 1, when IDs are due. The annual Cloverbud Camp will be held, June 7-11, 9:30-11:00 a.m., in the Exhibit Hall at the Fairgrounds. Also

on June 7, there will be the Eastern Slope Horse Judging, which is an all day event.

Our business meeting was adjourned at 3:55 p.m., and then came the presentations.

We had presentations from Daniel, Josiah, and Levi Cabrera, Anna Fisher, and Cody Rosburg. Daniel presented a lesson on Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Josiah taught us about The Parts of the Compound Bow, and Levi Cabrera showed us all the Parts of a Goat. Anna gave us instruction on how to Care for Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Cody told us how to Age our horses by their teeth.

This has been another Elbert Creekside 4-H Update! Now you know what’s happening with us. Good luck to all participants in Jackpot Shows. I know that Fair time preparation has begun again.
