Number of cattle on feed rises in Colorado, but still below last year

The number of cattle and calves on feed in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more was estimated at 940,000 head as of May 1, according to the Colorado Agricultural Statistics Service. That’s up 1 percent from the previous month, but down 7 percent from May 1 of last year.

Those same feedlots marketed 145,000 head during April, 24 percent fewer than in March and 12 percent below those of a year ago. An estimated 170,000 head were place on feed during April, 8 percent less than in March, but 13 percent more than April 2009.
