Darrell Volgamore, 81, of Delta, Colo., passed away March 7, 2014 at the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Darrell Dean Volgamore was born on June 28, 1932, in Dickens, Neb., to Clint and Mollie Volgamore.
Clint was a farmer and decided to move his family to Parlin, Colo., in the summer of 1936 where his father had homesteaded a few years earlier. In March of 1938, they packed up once again and with a team of horses and a rubber tired wagon, moved the family to the Tongue Creek area (near Eckert). It took them two days to make the 107 mile trip.
Darrell worked with his dad, Clint, as a farmer in the Tongue Creek area. They grew hay, corn, and also raised hogs. In 1955, Darrell took a job in the Surface Creek creamery in Eckert making Challenge butter. He cut 68 pounds of butter into smaller cubes.
He met Velma Bonine in 1951 and they were married in 1952. In May of 1957, Darrell and Velma bought the A&W drive-in in Delta. The A&W was seasonal and closed in the winter months. During those months, Darrell worked again at the creamery. This time his job was driving around the area and picking up cans full of fresh cream from the local dairy farmers. In 1963, he got a job at Holly Sugar during the winter. He worked his way up over the years and became assistant shift chemist in the laboratory. He tested the final batches of sugar as each batch was processed.
In 1971, the highway was scheduled to be widened. In its path was the A&W Root Beer stand and it had to be torn down. It was sad days for the Volgamores and the town of Delta.
In 1974, Darrell took a job with the school district in the maintenance department. He did carpenter work and general maintenance in the schools in the North Fork area. He retired from the school district in 1994 after 20 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking in his workshop, traveling, camping and fishing.
Darrell is survived by his brother Don and Marilyn Volgamore of Carlsbad, Calif., and sister Lois and Jack Smith of Sacramento, Calif. Daughter Darla Volgamore of Hotchkiss, Colo., son Ken and Teresa Volgamore of Austin, Colo., daughter Sharon and Bryan TeGrotenhuis of Hotchkiss, Colo. Grandsons Kendall and Tina Volgamore of Cedaredge, Colo., Chris Volgamore of Austin, Colo., Brandon and Brittney England of Durango, Colo., and Andy and Brittney England of Fruita, Colo. He has six great-granddaughters Kendra, Emily and Courtney Volgamore of Cedaredge, Colo., Kennedy and Karley England of Fruita, Colo., and Katelynn England of Durango, Colo. One more great-grandchild is expected in June.
