Shirley Agnes Ochs

Shirley Agnes Ochs, 80, of Delta, Colo., passed away January 4, 2014.

She was born April 29, 1933, to Ishmael and Agnes Burns in Alexandria Bay, N.Y. She attended schools there and in 1954 graduated from Oswego State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught Elementary Education in Illian, N.Y., Colorado Springs, Colo., and Long Beach, Calif.

In 1958 she met Donald Ochs while teaching in Colorado Springs. They were married in Las Vegas on December 20, 1958 and celebrated 55 years of marriage in 2013. To this union came two children: Stacy with husband Mark Cool, and Russell Ochs with wife, Becky, both of Hotchkiss, Colo.

Shirley loved teaching, and later regretted not returning to it after her children were raised. She and Don moved from Colorado Springs to Hotchkiss in 1978 where she joined right in with her husband in operating their fruit farm. She enjoyed being a farmer’s wife and especially enjoyed meeting people as she sold fruit and later Christmas trees at the farm.

She was a member of the Mountain View Bible Church of Lazear, and held memberships in the Music and Arts Club, the Harmony Club, and earlier enjoyed Beta Sigma Phi as well. At the time of her passing, Shirley was the longest serving member of the Hotchkiss Senior Citizens Center. She began in 1980 and was still delivering meals until the program ended in October 2013. She was an ardent bridge player and over the years attended various Bible Studies. Family gatherings were a particular joy to her, as well as being a homemaker.

Shirley is survived by six grandchildren: Heather Cool, Matthew and wife, Abigail Cool, Andrew and wife, Fran Cool, Erica Ochs, Caleb Ochs, and Landon Ochs. There is also one great grandchild, Tatum Chandler Cool. She is also survived by her brother, Donald Burns and wife, Linda, of Los Alamos, N.M., Sisters Mary Young, of Bridgewater, N.J., and Mary Ellen Lyon and husband, Jim, of Bloomfield, N.Y.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Funeral services were held January 9, 2014, at Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery at Hotchkiss, Colo. ❖
