Gwen Petersen: In a Sow’s Ear 11-25-13

And then there’s the current obsession with what’s called an “obesity epidemic.” Look around. Fatty folk are everywhere. They don’t want to be tubby. They don’t want to raise overweight children. And yet ... at Halloween, kids harvest sacks full of candy. Stores, banks, offices keep bowls of assorted candies to offer to children, adults and passing strangers.

Processed foods give you “low-fat” goodies making you think you can eat without adding more blubber to your hips. Except fat is what makes things taste good. Remove the fat and the taste is like licking cardboard. So ... replace the fat with sugar and there you are — back to tasty, but trapped in sugar. It’s everywhere. Even a slice of bread has four grams of sugar. A can of any kind of soda has the equivalent of eight teaspoons of sugar. Imagine putting eight teaspoons of sugar on your oatmeal or your Rice Crispies (which, by the way, are already laced with sugar) ... well, you’d gag wouldn’t you? Not to mention the empty calories that rush to your thighs. Daily overdosing on sugary foods can make one pudgy, chubby, tubby, chunky, flabby, overly round, stout, hefty, plump and ... obese.

Obesity Blues

(tune: Blues in the Night)

Her mamma done tole her

When she was a fat child

Her mamma done tole her,

Hon, now sugar’s a two-face

It’ll give you a big rush

And when the sweet rush is done

Oh sugar’s a two-face

A worrisome sweet that’ll make you obese

And blubbery fat.

Now your belly’s growin’

And your waistline’s goin’, whooee!

See the fat that’s piling

Lard upon your body, whooee!

A-whooee-ah-whooee; clickety-clack

It’s makin’ you sad

And blubbery fat.

From New York to L.A.

From Bismark to St. Joe

Wherever the four winds blow

In all of the big towns

The fatsos get fatter

But there is one thing we know

Oh sugar’s a two-face,

A worrisome treat that’ll make you obese

And blubbery fat.

Her mamma done tole her

When she was a fat child

Her mamma done tole her,

Hon, now sugar’s a two-face

It’ll give you a big rush

And when the sweet rush is done

Oh sugar’s a two-face

A worrisome sweet that’ll make you obese

And blubbery fat.

Oooo - oooo - oooo - oooo - oooo

Her mamma done tole her ... ❖
