Weed Spotlight — Salt Cedar

Tina Booton

Tamarisk, or salt cedar, is an ornamental tree that is also a phreatophyte. The roots on tamarisk trees can go down 30 feet in the soil looking for water. This tree brings up various salts and nutrients through its deep roots. These salts are then stored in the leaf tissue. Each winter when the leaves are shed, these salts are deposited on top of the ground. This prohibits most of our native plants from thriving in close proximity to these trees. Therefore with time, tamarisk will become a solid stand. Go to http://www.weldweeds.org for more information on tamarisk trees and how to control them.
