Mad Jack Hanks: Tales From The O-NO Ranch 4-29-13

It finally happened gentle readers, the O-NO Ranch got the BIG ONE! Yep, sure did, I got a little over 2-feet of snow in three days and you talk about a wet snow. How wet was it? It was wetter than a 2-year-old’s diaper that hadn’t been changed in two days. That’s wet!

I have lived in Colorado for 28 years and twice in the mountains and never have I seen that much snow in one storm unless it was high on the mountain. Of course the wind had to blow drift after drift across our roads and around my buildings. I spent three days on that ol’ Allis Chalmers tractor (no cab) in 20 something degree temps with a 25 mph out of the north trying to keep my place open enough to get around and do my chores and to get to town if necessary. Mostly to no avail. The last day the pump on my front end loader broke while the bucket was all the way down. What is it now about Murphey’s Law? I still had a blade on the back so I dropped the bucket and did what I could with the blade which wasn’t a whole lot.

The sun is out today and it’s above freezing so the snow is beginning to melt off and it’s gonna’ be a muddy mess and that works for me.

Just a few days ago Joe was asking if I was gonna have grass for some of his steers. I didn’t know the answer then but I do now. Yep, I’m gonna’ have a lot of grass and plus all that ... I will be able to trim my horse’s feet. It has been so dry for so long it has really made their feet tough as iron.

Even with all of the difficulties from this storm, I’m purty much a happy Jack these days. I’m always pretty happy and it’s hard to get me down. I have had a little cabin fever with all of the recent wind and extended cold weather. More snow next week so the weather girl says, and I’ll just look forward to it and be happy with whatever comes along.

As a sidebar, for my part, I am happy that the gun legislation our President wanted so badly to pass and become law DIDN’T. I like my personal freedom and given the events going on in Boston as I write where this terrorist is on the loose, I’m bettin’ a lot of folks in that city are wishing they were armed to the teeth. We live in a troubled world where the unexpected now will be the expected if we wish to survive in an America that is changing faster than a fashion model behind the curtains. I truly believe it will get better if we who cherish common sense stick together and maybe, just maybe we won’t have to have the BIG ONE!

Stay tuned, check yer cinch on occasion and stand up and stand tall for what you believe, and I’ll c y’all, all y’all. ❖
