Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the Making Art Auction
The Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado presents Memories in the Making® (MIM) Art Auction at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Thursday, June 7, 2012.
The theme this year is Classic Western and there will be many touches reminiscent of Colorado’s Western heritage including the musical entertainment, the decor, select pieces of Memories in the Making art available during the auction, and a sampling of Fiber Arts for sale.
Seventy-two pieces of artwork created by those with Alzheimer’s will be auctioned during both a silent and live auction. More than 35 pieces of professional art are paired with the Alzheimer’s work in addition to 60 original art palettes all donated by local professional artists. Proceeds support Alzheimer’s programs and services as well as research to develop better treatments and to eventually find a cure.
The artwork selected for the auction was created in the Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the Making art programs in 45 locations throughout the Denver/Boulder area. More than 4,000 pieces were submitted for the jury process. That means Alzheimer’s artists were engaged in an activity that provides socialization, improves self esteem, creates a sense of purpose and often times simply joy. That joy is also shared with the families of the artist as memories often long forgotten or not able to be shared in words are retold through art.
“When Alzheimer’s Association staff calls to let a family know their loved one’s watercolor will be featured in the annual art auction we often hear the call has brought them a moment of light and joy during what is a very dark and difficult journey,” said Gwen Ippen, Alzheimer’s Association MIM program coordinator.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with live music by Classic Western with Cliff Spratt, the silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres buffet by Epicurean catering, balloon prize drawings and viewing of the live art selections as well as a collection of original palettes by renowned professional artists. New this year there will be a variety of fun activities on the Plaza outside of Gate 7 as guests enter. The live auction begins at 7:15 p.m.
Tickets are $165 for individual tickets, $85 for those 35 and younger and can be purchased by calling (303) 813-1669 or going online to ALZ.org/co.
