Annual 4-H Trail Ride planned Oct. 9-10
LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraskans can horseback ride through some of Nebraska’s most scenic country during the 2010 Nebraska 4-H Foundation Trail Ride at the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey Oct. 9-10.
“Many people have marveled at the beauty of the Nebraska National Forest as they travel Highway 2 between Halsey and Thedford,” said Dewey Teel, UNL Extension educator in Antelope County. “But how many have experienced the forest by riding through the trees and hills by horseback? It is certainly different than driving by in a vehicle.”
Those interested in the ride can bring their horses and join some 100 other horse enthusiasts at this fun-filled family weekend of horseback riding.
Registration deadline for the 12th annual ride is Sept. 24. The annual ride is organized and run by a group of UNL Extension staff and many volunteers. Trail bosses are Teel and Gary Stauffer, UNL Extension educator in Holt County.
The weekend includes four trail rides through the hills and trees, craft making, cowboy breakfast and a fund-raising auction, Teel said. The Baker Family of Ord will provide cowboy music and entertainment after the Saturday evening steak fry and inspirational services on Sunday morning.
For the non-horseback riders, wagons pulled by teams are available. Wagon riders will enjoy riding along many trails through the trees and hills as well, Teel said.
“Previous rides have proven to be fun and exciting for all ages as riders enjoy the forest and the Sandhills by horseback,” he said. “Youth, parents, and grandparents have enjoyed the weekend for the past 11 years.”
Proceeds from the trail ride go to the Nebraska 4-H Foundation to help support many 4-H activities and events.
