Producers in hard red winter wheat states have been experiencing extremely high basis levels. Reports last week indicated that basis levels – which include discounts and transportation charges taken at the elevator – were up to two-dollars under the Kansas City Board of Trade futures price. CEO of the National Association of Wheat Growers Dana Peterson says the basis challenges are being caused by large stocks of low-protein wheat from last year’s crop and concerns about protein levels in the new crop just starting to come in.
