Bill Perusek Memorial Roping event set for May 19
Roping teams and the general public alike are invited to attend the ninth annual Bill Perusek Memorial Roping event May 19.
About 500 teams participate each year in the event, which takes place at The Barn at Montero’s north of Greeley, and serves as a scholarship money raiser for the Bill Perusek Memorial Scholarship Fund.
“We’ve had such great participation … and are so thankful for all of the roping teams and sponsors that help make this event a success each year,” said Barb Perusek, Bill’s widow.
Perusek spent 30 years with the Colorado Brand Board, with most of those as an inspector and/or director of the Greeley Brand Board office at Greeley Producers.
Perusek was 64 when he died of cancer on Nov. 20, 2003, about two months after he was diagnosed. The roping event was started by friends and family the following year.
The event has grown to include more than 75 sponsors, and it’s because of those sponsors, Barb said, that the number of scholarships given has increased each year. Since its inception, scholarships have been awarded to nearly 50 high school seniors.
The event is free for spectators. Concessions will be available – efforts headed by the Weld County Queens Court – and there will also be a silent auction.
Roping divisions include open handicap (a $25 per roper entry fee), open handicap prize drawpot ($20), No. 12 Handicap ($25) and kids dummy roping (free).
No cards are needed in any of the roping divisions.
