April 11-14 Double B Barrel Productions set up shop at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Neb., and pulled double duty producing two races during the Bonus Race Finals with over 1,800 entries. Barrel racers from across the country braved the cold, wet and very muddy conditions to compete for the large prize purse up for grabs in the open race and the renowned Run for the Bonus.

The Run for the Bonus is a race which riders have a year to qualify for by going to sanctioned races and winning a division. Thanks to great sponsors the bonus jackpot amount has grown each year to nearly $40,000 in addition to trophy saddles, coats, buckles halters and other great awards.

This year taking home a big chunk of change was local barrel racer Jessica Bauman aboard her mare Sass and Dash, who clocked the fastest time of the weekend in the Amy Countryman arena with a 15.823 — winning the coveted Run for the Bonus top 1D payout of $4,486. Bauman edged out Snyder Colorado’s Hayden Segelke on a horse who made his National Finals Rodeo (NFR) debut this past December, HPQ Smokin Rascal. Segelke had held the fastest time the majority of the weekend with a 15.871. Bauman’s horse better known as Stella, whom Bauman bought as a weanling from Prairie Star Farms in Emerald, Neb., was trained by Bauman. She continued her money earning streak by also placing in the 1D and 2D of the open race earning her another $2,000 for the weekend.

Tana Poppino, NFR qualifier from Big Cabin, Okla., was also on fire this weekend picking up the top two spots in the 1D of the open race. Poppino won both spots on her gelding Doc’s Hickory Cross, or Goose, who clocked a 13.614 and a 13.670 respectively in the multipurpose arena. For her efforts Poppino banked $5,207, but she didn’t stop there. Poppino qualified for the Run for the Bonus on former NFR horse Perryman Star, or Amigo, and earned a sixth place check for $2,083.00.
