Bounty fish add to Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby winners
A small village of over 400 adult fishermen and about 50 small fry grew overnight on the frozen surface of Saratoga Lake the weekend of Jan. 19-20 during the annual 2008 Ice Fishing Derby. Many of the anglers won prizes for their efforts, as well as enjoying the fun and the fish they caught.
Biggest fish – David Condict, Saratoga -20 inches long, 3.32 pounds, $2,000.
Second biggest fish – Fred Lamb, Laramie – 19.5 inches long, 2.76 pounds – $1,000.
Third biggest fish – Xavier Lopez, Laramie – 19.1-inch long, 2.6 pounds – $500.
Small Fry winner – Frank Stellpflug IV, Torrington – 16.1-inch trout, 1.28 pounds – $200 U.S. Savings Bond, and a toy truck donated by NAPA Auto Parts of Saratoga. Adult fishermen catching the largest fish of each hour won a $100 cash award. Small Fry fishermen also won hourly prizes of $20 for the largest fish caught during the hour. Door prizes donated by a number of area businesses were also drawn each hour.
In addition, two tagged bounty fish were caught during the derby adding to the overall winners for the weekend. These were the first Bounty fish caught during the derby since 2005.
First Bounty fish-Jennifer Wilcox,Wheatland, $500.
Second Bounty fish-Richard Chapman, Arvada, Colo., $250.
The 2008 Ice Fishing Derby at Saratoga Lake is history, but it is certain that there are many more fishermen with tales to tell about their weekend adventure after participating.
