Centennial Village Museum Trick or Treat Nights, Oct. 29-30
Centennial Village Museum is gearing up for the annual trick or treat nights on Oct. 29 and 30. From 5-7pm each evening, young children with their parents are invited to a safe and unique round of trick or treating, games and other activities. There is no admission charge, but donations to the museum are always welcome.
The event is most suitable for children ten and younger, with child-friendly activities and decorations. Children can play simple games like Spin the Witch, Ghost Ring Toss and Punkin’ Chuckin.’ There is a Rattler Toss game at Rattlesnake Kate’s house and a lighted area with tombstones beside the house. Judge Roy Hasbean holds court in the log courthouse and orders children to perform jumping jacks, standing on one leg and similar sentences before they receive a treat.
Volunteers at several houses hand out treats, and there is a marshmallow toasting fire at the chuck wagon campsite, weather permitting. The blacksmith shop is transformed into a “Punkinsmith,” and the Union Pacific Depot into the Spidertorium.
Sidewalks are lined with ghost luminaries, lighted jack-o-lanterns, corn shocks and Halloween lights. There are witches in the Stevens House upstairs sunroom, ghost riders in the 1917 Trolley, and bats and ghosts hanging from many trees.
Trick or treat nights have been taking place at Centennial Village for 17 years. Visitors come from many different neighborhoods in Greeley, as well as surrounding towns. The event is also popular with volunteers, involving University of Northern Colorado student groups, regular museum volunteers and other community groups.
Funding for this year’s trick or treat nights comes from Friends of the Greeley Museums, Peakview Medical Center and the Greeley Medical Clinic. Centennial Village is located at 14th Ave. and A St. in Greeley. For more information, call 970-350-9220 or visit http://www.centennialvillagemuseum.com.
