Conservation Initiative Grazing School in June

Bruce Fickenscher
CSU Cooperative Extension/Southeast Area

The Colorado Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) Committee, Colorado State University Extension, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service are offering a Grazing School at the Hub City Senior Center in Limon, Colo., on June 15-16.

Beginning at 1 p.m. on June 15, the program will offer discussions on Ecological Site descriptions, Plant Growth, and the Response of those plants to grazing by Ben Berlinger from USDA/NRCS in La Junta. Harvey Sprock, USDA/NRCS in Greeley, will lead attendees through Prescribe Grazing Management Strategies and Roy Roath, CSU Extension Range Specialist will discuss Stocking Rates and Drought Management. The evening program will let producers look at some herd management strategies and how those strategies may affect overall herd production and economic return.

The second day, June 16, will begin with Dr. Temple Grandin discussing Animal Behavior and Facility Design. Then guests will travel to the Lasater Ranch for demonstrations and overviews of Rangeland Health Assessments, the Grazing Response Index (GRI) and Range EKG monitoring tools, and the use of Permanent Transects. Transportation will be provided and  incentives will be offered to individuals who use the provided transportation to limit the number of vehicles at the Lasaster Ranch Range locations.

This program is targeted to private landowners, so registration of agency personnel (NRCS, Forest Service, Extension, etc.) is limited to 20. Several Conservation Districts are offering scholarships to a limited number of landowners in their specific districts. Please check with your local NRCS office for availability. Registration includes the evening meal on June 15, the noon meal on June 16, and transportation to and from the Lasaster Ranch. Registration forms are available at your local CSU Extension office, USDA/NRCS office or online at http://kiowacounty.colostate.edu/
