Crawford Pioneer Days, June 11-13
The 31st Annual Pioneer Days celebration of Western Heritage will be held June 11, 12 and 13, 2009 in Crawford, Colo. This year’s theme is “Spirit of Crawford Country” and is filled with lots of fun activities.
Pioneer Days begins on Thursday night with an old-fashioned Melodrama, performed by the many “talented” volunteers of the community. Complete with a villain, a hero and a heroine in distress, with audience participation!
Friday’s events include the ever-popular Baking Contest, where youngsters and adults can bring their goods to be judged and awarded. This is followed by a dinner to raise funds for the fireworks, and the annual Auction. This Auction funds future Pioneer Days with the sale of unique items from local merchants and special treasures from local artisans.
Come early on Saturday morning to enjoy the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department’s breakfast in Town Park and a kid’s fishing clinic at Crawford State Park. Visitors line the streets of town by 10 a.m., for the most amazing small town parade. Next, visit craft and food booths, two more Melodrama performances, a Horseshoe tournament and free games for all ages. Live musical entertainment in the park featuring David and Tamara Hauze and other local talented performers starts after the parade and will go nonstop all day.
New events this year during Pioneer Days will include Outhouse Races, scheduled for noon in Crawford Town Park. You won’t want to miss this spectacle … and if you are reading this now, you have time to make your own outhouse and enter the competition. One person must remain in the outhouse, while teammates roll the contraption through Crawford Town Park. Cash prizes made possible by Dufon Land & Cattle. Please visit http://www.crawfordcountry.org for rules and an entry form.
At 2 p.m., we’ll start the Arm Wrestling Competition. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to winners of various weight classes. The first 50 people to sign up for the competition will receive a T-shirt. After a fun afternoon, enjoy the Cowboy Cook-off where you can taste and vote for your favorite chili or stew. At 6:30 p.m., the Street Dance begins with another local favorite ” North Country Band. Saturday evening is topped off by a spectacular Fireworks display over Crawford State Park, put on by Crawford’s own Volunteer Fire Department!
