Limon High School FFA in Limon, Colo., will be honored with a $500 prize for most creative entry in the Weeding out Hunger with Halex GT FFA Video Challenge, sponsored by Syngenta. Limon FFA competed against FFA chapters nationwide to become a finalist in the competition.

This is the first year Syngenta has hosted the Weeding Out Hunger FFA Video Challenge. In January, National FFA chapters were invited to upload a short video through the Weeding out Hunger Facebook page describing the importance of FFA and agriculture in their community, and in providing for the food, fiber, fuel and feed needs of the nation.

After online voting and judging from a select panel including Syngenta, FFA and agricultural media representatives, Limon FFA was chosen to receive the Best-in-Class award for most creative entry. Students who participated in the video challenge will be rewarded with a pizza party on May 26.

“At Syngenta, we know how important FFA is to communities and how proud its members are to be a part of agriculture,” said David Pinon, senior communications manager, Syngenta. “With this competition, we wanted to give chapters the opportunity to use a fun and social medium like video to share their pride with others who may not fully understand agriculture and FFA.”

Today, more than 50 million Americans are food insecure, which means they have limited access to adequate food due to lack of money or other resources. In Colorado alone, 14.3 percent of adults and 19.6 percent of children are food insecure according to Feeding America.

It was startling statistics like these, intensified by the recession, that led Syngenta in 2010 to launch Weeding out Hunger, a hunger-relief campaign based on sales of Halex GT corn herbicide. In its first year, the campaign donated $100,898 and more than five tons of food to 78 food banks in 24 states.

Weeding out Hunger continues in 2011 with a total of $100,000 being donated to local food banks in areas where Halex GT is sold. Already, more than $17,000 and two tons of non-perishable food items have been donated to food banks.

Manufactured by Syngenta, Halex GT is Glyphosate with Residual for glyphosate-tolerant corn, and outperforms and out-yields any other post-emergence, straight glyphosate corn herbicide program with just one application.
