From the Beginning: Big R of Greeley
September 21, 2010
Big R of Greeley is a merchandise farm-agricultural store that has a long family history. Owner Rocky Francis will tell you, they have a little bit of everything.
Francis’ father started the business in 1960, when Rocky was just 11-years-old. He took over the business in 2002.
Rocky has seen the business grow since he was 11 years old.
“It’s just like the evolution of everything else,” Francis said. “I’ve seen product lines come and go, but it’s basically the same.”
Big R of Greeley spans over 20 acres in Greeley. Along with the main Big R store there is a tire store and a farm store. When it was first built, it was the largest retail store in Greeley.
“There was no such thing as a Lowe’s or Home Depot,” Francis said. “The old K-Mart store became the largest, but it didn’t stick around very long. We’ve had competition coming and going.”

There are not quite 500 stores across the United States of this kind.
“It’s been here a long time, and it’s going to be here a lot longer,” Francis said.
Francis has 70 employees and he attributes the businesses success to them and to the diversity of the products.
Francis has advertised with the Fence Post for 30 years.
“They are Ag related and it’s a nice paper that reaches places that the local papers don’t,” Francis said. “I like it, it’s a handy little paper, they read it not only for the ads but it gives you a good idea of what’s going on in the state of Ag.”
