From the Beginning: Poudre Valley Coop

The Poudre Valley Coop turned 60 this year. They are a full service, farmer owned Coop.

They are a Farm and Ranch Supply store and as of 2002, they have an Ace hardware store. They also have a full fertilizer store, spray company and a 24-hour full service fueling station and they are a full propane service.

It was founded in 1947 at North College Street in Fort Collins, Colo. It moved to its current location in 1976.

A cooperative is a business that is owned and operated by the people who use it. This Coop has 2,100 members located primarily in Larimer, Weld, Adams and Boulder Counties, as well as Laramie, Wyo.

Harvey has been the manager of the seed division for five years.

“We are always expanding our line and coming out with new seed varieties every year,” Harvey said. “We work with a research company every year.”

The Coop offers 13 different types of seed including, Annual Ryegrass, Tall Fescue, Prairie Brome and Alfalfa.

They distribute seed to not only the major garden centers in Colorado but also to New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, Kansas and Wyoming.

Poudre Valley Coop also offers on sight truck repair.

Harvey attributes the success of the Coop to its quality and service.

“That’s what has kept us here for 60 years,” Harvey said. “Our service sells our product and our product sells our service.”
