Gwen Petersen: In a Sow’s Ear 9-23-13
Big Timber, Mont.
On a ranch, a working cowdog is a necessity. A good dog is like a superior hired hand but you don’t have to pay wages. Recently Rancher Clyde acquired a new Heeler pup. The pup is in training and so is Clyde.
Everybody Loves My Dog
Except My Wife
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
I got me a new Heeler pup, he’s gray and white
My lovely bride had a pair of sandals — brand new
The Heeler pup, he ate not one, but two.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
In her opinion, chewing sandals ain’t nice.
My pup — I named him Zeus —
threw up the shoes
In nasty piles the texture of mulligan stews.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
In order to avoid matrimonial strife
I scooped up the piles of puke and mopped the floor
And made real sure that Zeus went out the door.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Heeler pups on a ranch are a way of life
But Zeus has a natural talent for causing woes.
On the line outside hung a row of fresh-washed clothes.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Zeus is a merry pup; tis a way of life.
Those clothes presented a chance to practice heeling
So he grabbed and ripped and tore with puppy feeling.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Although she’s a strong believer in right to life
When she saw the devastation of puppy damage
Holding her temper in check, she barely managed.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
But If Zeus don’t settle down, he might not survive.
Pups are curious and a Heeler likes to chase.
When Zeus jumped a skunk he got sprayed right in the face.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
The ways that pup annoys my bride is rife
Especially when he rolls in those lovely posies
Dropped by cows and sheep and horsies.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
Everybody loves my dog except my wife.
It’s a tune I could fiddle along with drum and fife
Though I’ve said it before,
I’ll say it again twice
Everybody loves my dog except my wife,
Everybody loves my dog except my wife. ❖
