Would your child or grandchild enjoy learning what life was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Come join us for Heritage Camp at MacGregor Ranch near Estes Park and step back into the past and see what pioneer children had to do every day to help their families.
On day one there is an overall introduction to the ranch. Kids start in the kitchen and learn what it is like to cook on a wood-burning stove and how to pump water the old-fashioned way. Next the children make food (usually biscuits and strawberry jam) and take it to the ranch hands. The ranch hands will take them on a wagon ride and they will stop for a picnic lunch in the meadow. In the afternoon the children get to go for a tour of the museum to see who the MacGregors were and where they lived. They’ll also see the farm machinery that Alexander and Donald used to plant and harvest their crops.
Day two starts in the barnyard learning to help take care of the horses and chickens. A trip to the hayloft and a visit to the milking shed, milk house, root cellar, smoke house and garden will follow next. Children learn how the MacGregors raised their own food and how they preserved it without a refrigerator or freezer. Learning how to brand is next on the agenda and each child will brand a piece of leather and make a poke pouch. At lunch a real blacksmith will be demonstrating his craft. Some early American skills and crafts such a sawing wood, making a quilted pot holder or pillow on a treadle sewing machine and landscape painting will also be part of the day.
Day three again starts in the barnyard taking care of the ranch animals followed by a walk back to the A.Q. house to make homemade pies and do laundry with a wash tub and wringer. After lunch the ranch hands will teach kids how to lasso a calf and later they will be treated to a ride in an old-fashioned car. If there is time left in the day, kids will try their hands at building a log cabin and later play some early American games.
On the final day of camp, kids will be working hard to prepare a meal for their parents, ranch hands and visitors. The menu includes ranch stew, black bean stew, homemade rolls and hand-churned butter, fresh veggies from the garden, homemade pies, fresh fruit, homemade ice cream and fresh squeezed lemonade.
There will be four camps this year on the following dates: July 19-22, July 26-29, Aug. 9-12 and Aug. 16-19. These camps are held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. for four days and the cost is $250 per camper.
