Mad Jack: Greed is a four letter word
by “Mad” Jack Hanks
Well, you can probably tell that I don’t have much, never have and probably never will when it comes to wealth as defined by assets, money and material things. I do have a great deal of wealth in my wife, kids, their kids and many good friends.
In view of the recent demise of what were thought to be well funded and legitimate corporations, one might think that there are a lot of crooks out in the business world. One would be right to think that!
I think it all started with ole Billy Sol Estes down in Texas. Some of you will remember him. He was the guy that borrowed lots and lots of money on fertilizer tanks that he didn’t own. Heck, they didn’t even exist ! I was just a mere teen back then in the ’50s, but I do recall the men folk talkin’ about what a smart and cunning fellow ole Billy Sol was. To use modern terms, they would have said that he was cool!
White collar crime has taken some giant steps forward since that time.
Let me throw this one at ya: there is this member organization right here in the good ole U.S. of A. (or we could just call it a company) with over 500 employees. These employees have over the years piled up these statistics: 29 have been arrested for spousal abuse, seven have been arrested for fraud, 19 have been accused of writing bad checks, 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least two businesses, three have done time for assault, 71 cannot get a credit card due to their bad credit, 14 have been arrested for drug-related charges, eight have been arrested for shoplifting, 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits, and 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year.
Can you name this company? You pay their salaries, you should know who they are! Gentle readers, it’s the 535 members of congress, the same nitwits that construct and crank out new laws for you and me to obey each year! I believe that they find themselves in those positions because of greed. Greed, like lust, is a four letter word. And, of course, there are some GOOD members of congress. Thank God!
Little Miss Martha would like to take over for a few minutes and finish this column:
Gentle readers, and indeed you are gentle. I want to express my personal thanks and appreciation for all your wonderful cards and letters. So many of you have walked this road before me and your letters were filled with such compassion. They touched me deeply and warmed my heart.
I must admit, there were times when I cried out to God, “Where are you, God?” He reminded me that He was sending His love in every one of your letters. I knew that Lord, I just forgot for a moment.
I wish I could meet each one of you in person, and maybe someday we will meet.
Until then, may God bless you.
Oh yeah, be sure and check that chinch REAL OFTEN!
