Mad Jack Hanks: Tales from the O-NO Ranch 12-27-10
This time every year my cowboy brain ponders, “What will the new year bring?” Do you anticipate this also? The way we have this deal set up is we set a time frame from one point in time to another point in time and call it a calendar year. Whatever happens during that span of time is recorded and then we can refer back to it and refer to certain incidents that happened during that calendar year. A war started, a loved one died, you had your first grandchild and as time marches on our memory begins to fade somewhat on certain things and dates.
I saw on the “telly” last night where five different individuals had been found that could have instant recall on what happened on any given day in any certain year that they were alive. Did you see that program? Absolutely amazing! Heck, I let the water trough run over again just yesterday, but I digress. I ain’t makin’ this up! These five folks could recall what they had for breakfast on Sept. 5, 1987. “Yep, it was a Tuesday, and I was almost late for work so I just grabbed a cold pop tart and wolfed it down on the way to the garage!” Gentle readers, I don’t know what this new year will bring for me or for you and I guarantee you that five days into the new year I won’t be able to recall what I had for lunch the day before.
I hope the new year will bring the beginning to the end of the war in Afghanistan and our kids can come home and start living lives that have some real meaning and purpose not only to them but to our country. I would hope that we would begin to close our southern border and do something about the drug wars that have overflowed into our country. I would also hope that our economy would begin to improve and if you have been out of meaningful work, you find the job that you desire. I pray that if there is illness in your family that somehow in this new year it will be resolved with a clean bill of health.
For me, I plan on making new friends, do my best not to say or do anything unkind to the friends that I have. I have high hopes of staying healthy and get in lots of riding time on the ponies and the Harley. I will make every effort to become a better father and grandfather to my kids and grandkids. I will put my trust in the powers above and my Smith and Wesson and of course, my charmin’ personality!! Ha! Gentle readers, go into this new year with the idea that it’s gonna’ be a good ‘un for you and by golly, it just might be!
