Mad Jack Hanks: Tales from the O-NO Ranch 4-25-11
April 25, 2011
What’s around the corner, only the shadow knows? Well, gentle readers, I hope that more moisture and warmer weather is around the corner. I need a little more, I mean, a lot more green grass here at the O-NO.
I’m hoping that around the corner is a computer that will work at least 75 percent of the time without causing me to want to throw a “hissy fit.” I am writing this column on my daughter’s computer and the screen is about the size of one of those big new liquid televisions and I’m having to sit a couple of feet away form the screen which causes me to really squint to see what I have written. I’m not complaining, I’m glad I was able to get this done. My computer which is only 3-years-old has frozen up and I’ve been alerted that I have a total of 38 viruses, yep that’s all, just 38 at present. Computers frustrate me to start with because of my lack of knowledge on operating one effectively.
What else is around the corner? I hope that cattle prices stay at these higher levels and farm commodities follow suite. I’m thinking about buying a good used car and parking the truck except for use around the place. That 13 miles to the gallon just won’t get it the way gas prices are now. Have you got a good ole Buick or comfortable car that get’s that 28-30 mpg? Let me know and we might have to make a little medicine.
Politics is beginning to get messy again as we seem to be lacking leadership from both parties. So, what else is new?
There will be a lot of spring works just around the corner. Don’t stick yerself with the eight way vaccine and after you castrate count all your fingers. A good many folks band bull calves and I think that has worked out pretty well. There is always something new every year in almost every industry. No till drilling of seed years ago worked well in many areas of the country. The Savory Grazing method was another tool that cattlemen in some areas could implement and see some improvement in not only their pastures but additional weight gains in their livestock. Yep, there will always be something new just around the corner. It could be good and of course, it could be not so good.
We need lower fuel prices and we need to get this economy rollin’ again. I wish you a prosperous summer with acceptable results in all that you do. Me, well, I’m gonna’ have my usual fun and take it a day at a time and make some good and reflective summer memories.
