Mad Jack Hanks: Tales From The O-NO Ranch 5-20-13
May 20, 2013
First, gentle readers, let me say that I hope all of you moms out there had a really nice Mother's Day.
Obviously, we can't see around corners, now can we? Nope, that's just something that we are not capable of. Here we are in May and the summer months are ahead of us and I wonder, are we going to have a really good summer with lots of grass for livestock and lots of hay put up for next winter? Don't know cause I can't see around the corner.
I just turned my ole paint hoss loose as we took a little trip around the pasture fence to see what kind of condition that old fence is in and if it is indeed good enough to hold some steers that should be coming here in a week or so. I have to say that I have had adequate moisture but need some warmer days. I didn't see a lot of green grass as I rode this morning.
By the time you read this column I will have turned 73 years of age. I'm doin' good for an old guy. I say that as I compare myself to other fellers I come in contact with my own age or there about. I have been blessed but I'm like Jimmy Stewart in an old movie about the civil war in which he was seated at the table with his family and saying grace. It went something like this, "Lord, we give you thanks today for this meal and all of it's bounty. We thank you for this farm and all that it has provided. However, you and I both know that without my hard work and the hard work of this family, we would not have had the corn crop we enjoy today!" That's just an off hand view of what I remember the point of his prayer was. In other words, I feel very blessed to be in good shape, and feel good and I credit God's blessings for a good part of that. However, I don't think I would be in this kind of condition if I didn't go swimming, dancing, do chores around the O-NO such as fix fence, trim my horses feet when needed, poison weeds plus running up and down the floors of the ER at the hospital, cleaning rooms, making beds and transferring patients when needed to other locations. That's just the facts the way I see them.
l can't see around the corner so I don't know if I will remain healthy, or get hurt in some manner by ole paint or the iron hoss, the Harley. I don't know if there will be abundant grass all summer or how many if any rattlesnakes I will encounter these warm days. I don't hear as well as I used to nor do I see as well as 20 years ago so quien sabe, who knows? Sounds like I may just be looking for excuses if it all doesn't all work out like I would hope, huh? We need a good summer with lots of moisture so we don't have to have all those big fires all across the country like we have had to endure these past summers. Folks need enough grass for their cattle so that they can recover some of the losses they have incurred by having to sell off their herds or parts of them to survive.
Well, Charlie Brown, I don't know what's around the corner. I don't know if Lucy is going to jerk the football away or not. Let's hope and pray that this summer is a "good 'un" for us all. With that let me say, stay tuned, check yer cinch on occasion, stand tall for the right things and I'll c y'all, all y'all. ❖
