Meat Goat Workshop planned Feb. 6
LINCOLN, Neb. – Interest in raising meat goats has gained momentum with the increasing demand for goat meat in the United States. UNL Extension is sponsoring an Eastern Nebraska Meat Goat Workshop to assist those currently involved in goat production and others interested in learning about raising meat goats.
The workshop will be from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at UNL’s Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead at the August. N. Christenson Research and Education Building. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
The workshop is aimed at people new to goat production, as well as established goat producers, said Sara Ellicott, UNL Extension educator. It will be of interest to those looking at raising goats for profit or acreage owners looking at having a few goats as domesticated animals.
Randy Saner, UNL Extension educator, Lincoln/McPherson counties, and Brian Faris, Kansas State University sheep and meat goat extension specialist, will present at the workshop. Both have extensive meat goat experience and are very knowledgeable about the topics they will be presenting, Ellicott said.
Topics include: multi-species grazing, parasite management, marketing and FAMACHA training (a hands-on parasite management tool).
Early registration is recommended to reserve a seat and resource materials. Cost is $25 for the first person from an operation for those registering by Jan. 29, and $10 per additional person from the same operation. After Jan. 29, the fee is $40 for the first person, and $25 per additional person from the same operation. The FAMACHA training has a $10 per family or operation fee for materials. This fee should be added to the registration total.
