The National Western Stock Show Complex was built for the Stock Show in 1906. The idea stemmed from the Stockyards Company in Chicago and after a couple of feeble attempts, the concept came to be. The first couple of years, tents were set up in conjunction with the yards ” a similar look to that of Denver International Airport.

In 1908, the Denver Union Stockyards built the stadium arena for a little more than $200,000.

In the early years, the Stock Show was just that, a stock show. The rodeo didn’t come along until 1933.

The National Western Stock Show has been held every year but one, 1915, when there was an outbreak of hoof and mouth disease in the United States.

The yards are the cornerstone of the Stock Show. “You cannot go anywhere else in the world and see a show like the yard show,” said Marvin Witt, marketing director for the National Western Complex Inc. “People are in awe of it. The genetic base of the livestock industry tone is set in Denver.

“I can safely say that you have not experienced the National Western Stock Show unless you take a day to walk through the yards,” added Witt.

Over the years the National Western Stock Show has become much more than just livestock.

In April of 1994, the Horse Expo was held in the brand new Event Center, a $11.5 million project.

“Agriculture is our main mission,” says Witt. “We feel than 51 percent of the displays need to be ag or ag-related.”
