Edith Irene Smolik, 93, of Lincoln and formerly of Tryon, died July 14, 2009, in Lincoln.

She was born June 19, 1916, in Tryon to George and Carrie (Holloway) Downing. She lived in Tryon most of her life. She had to quit school to help on the ranch.

She married Millard Smolik on July 11, 1935, in Ogallala. They raised turkeys for many years. The couple ranched until Millard retired in 1994, then the couple moved to Lincoln.

She attended the Ringgold Free Methodist Church. She loved Tryon and the Sandhills ranch country. She enjoyed crocheting, and made many baby afghans and gave them to unwed mothers, through the Lincoln home for unwed mothers.

Survivors include two sons, Martin (Carolyn) Smolik of Lincoln and Doug (Margie) Smolik of Raymond; three granddaughters, Linda (Billy) Baker of Greenville, Texas, Brenda (Dennis) Swanson of Gretna and Diane (Mike) Johnson of Carrollton, Texas; three grandsons, Joe (Maggie) Smolik of Columbia, Mo., Bryan and Brent Smolik of Lincoln; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents.
