Donald D. Herian, 83, Alliance died June 29, 2009, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance.

He was born May 30, 1926, in Alliance, Neb., to Charles and Berneice (Benschoter) Herian.

He grew up on the family ranch north of Antioch. He attended grade school in Antioch and high school in Curtis, Neb., and graduated from Alliance High School in 1944. He then enlisted in the Navy and was stationed on a ship mostly around China and the South Pacific. After an honorable discharge he returned to the ranch.

On March 28, 1948, he married Ila Mae Zabel. They lived on the Herian ranch and raised their children. Ila Mae died in 1970. He continued ranching. He loved life there taking care of both the land and the cattle.

His hobbies were calf roping and team roping with his buddies. He loved rodeos. He missed very few National Finals Rodeos. He also loved getting together with family and friends. Goose and duck hunting, watching Nebraska football and hunting arrowheads were great fun for him also.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Nebraska Cattlemen Association, Elks, Eagles, American Legion and VFW.

Survivors include his children, Lynda (Kenneth) Wood of Alliance, Rick (Becky) Herian of Alliance, and John (Lora) Herian of Alliance; his longtime companion of 30 years, Edyth Garner; his grandchildren, Kari (Chris) Farritor of Alliance, Aaron (Bridget) Woodall of Alliance, Holly (Jim) Fitzpatrick of Austin, Texas, Mandy (Todd) Spohn of Lincoln, Jeff (Chelsie) Herian of Alliance, Rhett Herian and Jakob Herian of Alliance and his great grandchildren, Karli and Konnor Farritor, Cameron and Emma Wood, and Jett Herian and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and his brother, Harold.
