, 80, of North Platte, died April 13, 2006, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

He was born Aug. 15, 1925, to Wilber and Clare Shaw Melvin in Sutherland.

He grew up in Arthur and graduated from Arthur High School in 1945. He entered into the U.S. Navy, served in Occupation Duty after WWII, and served during the Korean Conflict, being discharged in 1968.

He married Barbara Jean Morrison on Oct. 4, 1958, in Las Vegas, Nev. The couple moved to North Platte and the surrounding area after his discharge from the service. He worked for several ranches in the North Platte and Stapleton area. He retired in 1997 from ranching.

He was a member of the VFW in Stapleton, the Eagles Club, and he really enjoyed square dancing. He was active in rodeo all of his life, and judged rodeo and 4-H shows for many years.

Survivors include his wife of North Platte; one daughter, Kim (Bob) Dubs of North Platte; one son, Tim Melvin of North Platte; two brothers, Harold Melvin of North Platte and Frank (Gloria) Melvin of Sterling, Colo.; three grandchildren, Mitchell Melvin, Chelsey Melvin, and Trevor Melvin all of North Platte; one great-grandchild, Alexus Osborn of North Platte; two step-grandchildren, Chad (Kelly) Dubs of Sparks, Nev., and Brian Dubs of Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Janet Jean Melvin.
