Robert “Bob” W. Settles, age 81, of Mitchell, Neb., died Oct. 2, 2008, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 14, 1926, in Mitchell, to Harvey and Lucy (Naylor) Settles. He was raised and educated in the Sunflower area.

Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and following his honorable discharge, came back to

the Mitchell area.

On July 13, 1947, he married Alta Pedersen.

He worked for Summerville Oil, B & C Motors, United Oil, and Anderson International Harvest. He owned and operated Bob’s Texaco Service, and finally retired from Panhandle Co-op.

Bob’s loves were his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing, yard work, and tinkering in the garage.

Everyone who knew him will miss his sense of humor, his compassion and his gentleness.

Bob is survived by his wife, Alta; children and their spouses: Bruce and wife Mary of Berryville, Ark., Judy and husband Rick Saunders of Augusta, Ga., and Rod and wife Ginger of Wheatland, Wyo.; grandchildren: Tiffany Maguire, Kami Settles, Stuart and Michelle Saunders, Rachael and Jason Evans, Tanya and Jeremy Evans, Beau Cozad, Tim Cozad, John Steele, and Kristy Moore; and nine great-grandchildren: Rainey and Jagger Evans, Tristen, Patrick and Jackson Maguire, Kayce and Kody Saunders, Jayden Cozad, and Baizelle Cozad. He is also survived by brothers and sisters Dale Settles, Bonnie McNees, Donna Brewer, and J.D. Settles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law John and Hazel Pedersen; brothers-in-law Harry McNees and Dick Pedersen; daughter-in-law Rhonda Settles; and grandson, Jason Settles.

Services were held on Oct. 6, 2008, in Mitchell. Interment was held at Mitchell Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Prairie Haven Hospice and to the Mitchell Methodist Church.
