Alfred A. Cox, age 82, a longtime resident of the Fort Morgan, Colo., area, died March 7, 2009, at Valley View Villa Nursing Home.

He was born June 6, 1926, in Norton, Kan., to C. Ernest and Margaret Cox. The family moved to Morgan County when Alfred was young. He dropped out of school to enlist in the U.S. Army, serving from 1945 to 1947.

On March 5, 1947, he married Vera Drew in Fort Morgan.

Alfred farmed and ranched for many years. During this time, he worked many harvest campaigns at the Great Western Sugar Company. Later, he went to work for Morgan County, retiring as foreman on the road and bridge crew.

He was a life member of VFW Post 2551, and a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Alfred enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and growing and picking raspberries.

He is survived by his wife, Vera, of Fort Morgan; five children: Susan and husband Donald Hergenreter of Greeley, Ronald Cox of Berthoud, Colo., Kathleen and husband Larry Lorenzini of Weldona, Colo., Colleen and husband Marshall Gilliland of Wiggins, Colo., and Danny Cox and wife Kim of Crook, Colo.; 11 grandchildren: Troy and Ryan Hergenreter, Lori and husband Zale Hughes, Mandi and husband Matt Keating, Chad Lorenzini and wife Katie, Randy Cox and fiancee Maggie, Jeremy Gilliland and fiancee Erica, Jennifer and fiance Jake Cuckow, Becky and husband Jason Murphy, Travis Platt and wife Ashley, and Andrew Cox; and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Charles, of Johnson, Neb.; two half-sisters and four half-brothers.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Kimberling; five brothers: Edward, Ernest, Raymond, Frederick, and Calvin, and his parents.

A memorial service was held on March 11 in Fort Morgan. Military honors were presented by VFW Post 2551. Inurnment followed in Serenity Falls Columbarium at Riverside Cemetery.
