The Fence Post obituary: Montie Edward Munroe

Montie Edward Munroe, 70

Feb. 3, 1948 – Dec. 24, 2018

Encampment, Wyo.

Montie Edward Munroe, 70, of Encampment, Wyo., joined his Lord unexpectedly on Dec. 24, 2018.

He was born Feb. 3, 1948, in Fort Collins, Colo., and was raised in Wellington, Colo., on the Munroe Ranch. Montie was the only child to Edward “Buster” and Zelma Burch Munroe. He attended school at Buckeye and Fort Collins where he played football and wrestled, leaving school to become a full-time rancher and cowboy. Montie had several mentors in the ranching community and numerous friends. He had a wealth of wisdom for the true cowboy way of life from stockmanship, herding sheep, working good Australian Shepherd dogs, raising cattle, driving teams and training remount horses. He was an accomplished and proud graduate of “Sagebrush College.”

As an adult, Montie ranched in Wellington, Colo., with his parents before moving to a ranch in Encampment in 1972. On June 17, 1983, he married Cheryl Lucas. They melded their families together and were active in their community. He was especially supportive of county and state fairs. Montie loved all aspects of the cowboy way of life and ranching was in his blood. He was a devoted husband and father. He was an avid stockman and “one heck of a hand.” He will be remembered for his fun-loving and outgoing personality, along with his huge heart and smile. Montie loved his family and friends, but his favorite people were kids. Montie’s hobbies included watching all his kids and grandkids (biological or not) play sports, show their livestock, rodeo and cooking. He listened to good ol’ country music. He was one of the founding members of the Grand Encampment Cowboy Poetry Gathering. He was a Lion’s Club member and one of the entrance gate keepers for the annual Woodchopper’s Jamboree and Rodeo. He served on several agricultural boards and advisory committees.

Montie is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Cheryl Munroe, four children Cathy Glenn, Laramie, Wyo.; Monica (Chris) Solaas Rock Springs, Wyo.; Melissa (Beau) Addison Collbran, Colo.; and Lisle (Estella) Munroe Encampment. He is also survived by his grandchildren Josh (Erin) Solaas, Zach (Jennie) Solaas, Wyatt Glenn, Peyton Munroe, Coy Munroe, Sammi Addison and Lexi Addison as well as four great-grandchildren and many cousins.

Montie was preceded in death by both of his parents Edward “Buster” and Zelma Munroe.

Memorial services were held on Dec. 29, with Pastor Pat Jeffrey and Jerry Paxton officiating.
