Robert Hayes Hobbs, age 74, of Fairland, Okla., died May 13, 2008, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on March 1, 1934, in Sparta, Mo., to Alvin and Blenn (Hull) Hobbs. He was raised on the California Mesa in Delta, Colo.

Robert joined the Navy in 1954, and served until 1958. He sailed on the USS Saint Paul, one of the Pacific fleets’ best-known heavy cruisers. He later attended one of the best-known farrier schools in Oklahoma.

He married Marlene Hawk on Nov. 5, 1979, in Silverton, Colo.

Robert was a perfectionist at horseshoeing, welding, and everything he did. He loved dogs, cows and all animals. His passion was riding and training young horses, camping, and being in the mountains. He was a very caring father and will be dearly missed.

Robert is survived by his wife, Marlene Hobbs; one son, Kurt Hobbs of Fruita, Colo., and four daughters: Cindy Hobbs Smith of Killeen, Texas, Robyn Hobbs Neece of Miami, Okla., Dawn Hobbs Cowden of Hillrose, Colo., Lori Hobbs Rhoades of Miami, Okla., and daughter-in-law Laura Smith of Colona, Colo.; three stepsons: Jerry Hollingshead, Zane Hollingshead, and Kent Hollingshead, and one step-daughter, Kelly Hollingshead; 25 grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by five brothers: Joe Hobbs of Montrose, Colo., Charlie Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., Martin Esser of Olathe, Colo., Kenny Esser of Del Norte, Colo., and Larry Esser of Delta, Colo.; six sisters: Helen (Hobbs) Berger of Olathe, Pearl (Hobbs) Lock of Farmington, N.M., Twila (Esser) Love of Delta, Colo., Ann (Esser) Turner of Vici, Okla., Ethel (Esser) Davis of Woodland, Texas, and Marie (Esser) Humphrey of Montrose, Colo.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Graveside services will be held this fall at PeaGreen Cemetery, PeaGreen, Colo.
