Western Slope Obituaries for 4-06: Veta Lou Lechleiter; Helen Anne Campbell; Avis (Durham) Self

Veta Lou Lechleiter, age 75, longtime Montrose, Colo., resident, passed away at her home on March 3, 2009.

She was born on Dec. 22, 1933, to Louis and Annie (Hall) Tucker in Forrest, N.M. The family moved to Norwood, and then to Olathe, Colo. When Veta was in third grade, the family leased onion ground from the Lechleiter’s and began farming in Montrose. Veta spent her childhood and graduated from high school in Montrose.

She married Stewart Lechleiter on June 4, 1950. She helped build their family home, and worked as hard as any ranch hand, in addition to raising five children. Her home was always clean, but she preferred to be outside doing the ranch chores, helping wherever help was needed.

Veta had a special interest in being a Sunday School teacher and had many of the local children in her Bible classes.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Stewart; her children: JoAn and husband Arlo Hanson of Cedaredge, Colo., Darlene and husband Bob Distel of Grand Junction, Colo., Kim Lechleiter and P.K. Homewood of Coal Creek, Colo., Rita and husband Boyd McAlexander of Cedaredge, and Don Lechleiter of Montrose; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Jo Marie and husband Sam Stewart of Montrose, Bett Reed of Columbus, Ohio, and Joyce and husband J.B. Fisher of Billings, Mont.; and one brother, Merle Tucker and wife Martha of Yakima, Wash.

Veta was preceded in death by her parents and one infant brother.

Funeral services were held in Montrose. Interment followed at Valley Lawn Cemetery.
