Ochsner family makes strong showing with Limousin heifers at National Western
Kersey’s Ochsner family dominated the Junior Breeding Heifer competition for the Limousin breed at National Western Stock Show, claiming five prizes.
Caitlyn Ochsner, who performed the National Anthem at National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last month, took the Grand Champion title with her heifer AUTO Amerie last week. She also took first in the Junior Yearling Calves category.
“It was really exciting to show her at National Western. She looked the best she has ever looked,” Ochsner said, adding the show will be AUTO Amerie’s last. She is expected to calf in March, closing a strong show year that included Supreme Champion Heifer for overall breeds at the 2014 Weld County Fair.
Ochsner purchased the show heifer last March to expand the cowherd she has been building throughout her 4-H and FFA career, her father Kevin Ochsner said.
“She has been using money she earns from the market steers she sells at the Weld County Fair and bulls she sells from her existing cowherd to purchase show heifers from other leading breeders across the country,” Kevin added.
Also in the Limousin category, Collin Ochsner took 3rd in the Senior Heifer Calves category with KENV Angel Eyes.
In the Limousin-Lim-Flex competition, Ashlyn Ochsner took 4th in the heifer calves category with ALYN Bacardi Black and second in the Junior Yearling Heifer category with BPF FC Angels Beach Babe.
The Ochsner family operates Ochsner Limousin and Ochsner Tenderlean Beef east of Kersey.
In the Junior Breeding Heifers competition, Weld County youths claimed several other prizes. For horned Herefords, Samantha Campbell of Eaton took 3rd with SLC Miss Lily BFA1. Campbell also claimed 6th in the Polled Junior Heifer Calf Hereford category with Ernst MS 163Z Trust 461. In a separate grouping of the same category, John Hampton Cornelius of LaSalle took 2nd with CRR 88X Juliet 405. For the Polled Spring Yearling Females category for Herefords, Kolby Costerisan of Platteville placed 5th with BK Ashley 379A.
For Red Angus in the March Heifer Calves category, Garett and Brian Postle of High Bar Red Angus in Mead took 6th with 6R CAMEO 418B, as well as 6th in the March Yearling Calves group with CSPF SARAH. For January Heifer Calves, Sydney and Brian Postle took 6th with RAISLAND Tabitha 408-059. For February Yearling Heifers, they also claimed 6th with CSPF SARAH. ❖
