Wesley Steel, 77. lifelong Lincoln County rancher, died Nov. 7, 2010, in North Platte, after an extended battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 25, 1933, to E. Edd and Janie (Powell) Steel.

On Feb. 17, 1951, he married Joy Binegar in Ogallala, Neb. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1951. They made their home on the family ranch, where he spent the remainder of his life. The vast majority of his life was spent on the ranch, homesteaded by his grandparents and great uncles.

He operated the family ranch since the mid-1960s, when an accident forced the early retirement of his father, E. Edd Steel.

He served in the U.S. Army in 1955. Upon his return home he worked for Armour Packing, loading beef on rail cars. He also worked part time for the livestock auction barn in North Platte, 50-plus years.

He raised good quarter horses and excellent quality Hereford and Angus cross cattle. He took extreme pride in making sure they were well cared for. He had a knack for making real good ranch horses by using them. His children were taught his values by tagging along from early ages on Shetland ponies, using various pieces of haying equipment, and time spent working in the shop. As his physical condition deteriorated, his rides were limited to his four-wheeled horse on which his great grandchildren were always offered greatly appreciated rides with their Papa Wes.

Survivors include his wife, Joy; daughters, Karen (Mark) McVey and Pat Correll; son, Eddie (Susan) Steel; daughter, Sherri Britton and special friend Jeff Barent; grandchildren, Brian, Clay, and AJ McVey, Travis Correll and Ty (Kelly) Correll, Brandi (Jason) Tillman, Charles Steel (Lori Johnson), Patricia (Justin) Burry, Jennifer (Clint) VanderWey, Kelly (Justin) Loeffler; great-grandchildren, Conner Correll, Jayden and Carlee Tillman, Shyla Stearns, Jed and Nigel VanderWey, Isabelle Loeffler; one sister, Marie (Harvey) Grasz; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Edd and Janie Steel; one son, Mike Alan Steel; and a great-grandson, James VanderWey.
